Outing: Comedy Night

If you've never been to SAK Comedy Lab, it's about time you check it out.  It's easy to spend a whole night downtown without spending a lot of money.

Food  Most restaurants downtown that offer a stylish ambiance and delicious food will cost you.  Two restaurants - one mainstay and one brand new - would beg to differ.  For some tasty Thai food, check out Thai Cafe.  A minute's walk from all the action of Orange Ave, this quiet and dimly-lit restaurant delivers all your classic Thai dishes, most for $9.95.  If you're in the mood to overindulge, be sure to try the cheese rolls for $3.95.  The only drawback is their opening times: closed Saturdays and Sundays.  But if you miss them, come back for their $6.95 lunch specials!

If your comedy date falls on a Saturday, or you're in the mood to try Orange Avenue's newest restaurant, pay a visit to Cuba de Cuba Bistro.  It just opened this month, so the whole operation seems to be a bit wobbly, which might explain the less than perfect reviews.  (Then again, you don't review a restaurant within the first month...)  But personally, I thought the design was great, the service was friendly, and my medianoche sandwich and sweet plantains ($9) were good.  I'd say try it for yourselves.

Fun  Tuesday through Saturday, SAK Comedy Lab offers a variety of shows above the CityArts Factory, right in the heart of Downtown.  Show times range from 7:30pm to 11:30pm, so check the site before you go for times, parking information, and the reservation hotline.  Regular show admission is $15 general / $12 discounted (Florida ID holders, students, military, seniors).  Come to The Early Show, Saturdays at 11:30pm for $10 general / $7 discounted admission.

Drinks  You're already in the center of the downtown bar scene, so why not take advantage of some of the great deals?  One of my favorite (and one of the most unique) downtown bars is Eye Spy.  With a bar, an outdoor dance floor, secret rooms, and naughty phone booths, it has something for everyone.  If you need a break, sneak over to the connecting Bar-BQ-Bar.  There's never a cover and beer generally won't go over $3.  On the same corner is Independent Bar, with cool theme nights, free cover one way or another, and great $1 to $3 drink specials.

Total Cost for dinner, drinks, and a live comedy show: $20+ per person.
