The city is abuzz with news about the upcoming NBA All-Star Weekend 2012, when downtown Orlando will be filled with some of the world's best basketball players, famous stars, and excited sports fans.  It all culminates in the All-Star game Sunday night at 6:00pm.

But if you don't have hundreds of dollars to spend, there's still an option for you to see your favorite NBA players up close at the NBA All-Star Jam Session.  From Thursday, February 23rd through Sunday, February 24th, come to the Orange County Convention Center for 45 interactive attractions.  Tickets are $20 Adults, $12 Kids/Seniors/Military for Thursday and $30 Adults, $20 Kids/Seniors/Military Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

A lot of the action takes place at the OCCC's center court:  Friday is the celebrity game, Saturday morning you can watch the All-Star teams practice, and Sunday is the slam-dunk contest for mascots.  Doors open Thursday at 4:00pm , check out the complete schedule for more details.

Greyhound Express Bus Comes to Florida

Earlier this year, Greyhound expanded its Greyhound Express bus service to Florida, connecting Orlando directly to a host of major cities.  Get to the following cities without any transfers:

  • Atlanta (8 hours)
  • Ft. Lauderdale (3.5 hours)
  • Jacksonville (2.5 hours)
  • Miami (4.5 hours)
  • Savannah (6 hours)
  • Tampa (2 hours)

From cities like Atlanta, you can get to nearly anywhere in the United States.  These days,  Greyhound  buses are equipped with a lot of extras, including power outlets and WiFi.  Considering the time it takes to get to and from airports -- not to mention the security -- buses are a competitive alternative.  For a limited time, keep your eyes peeled for special $1 tickets when you book far in advance.

Weekend Preview: February 10th - 12th, 2012

This is a great weekend to be out and about in Orlando.  Here are just a few of the goings-on that really showcase the variety of events that Central Florida has to offer.  And if you partake in Valentine's Day, celebrate it  early this weekend -- my suggestions are in pink.
  • Block Party
    • Come to Orlando's uptown this Friday for the free Virginia Drive Live block party.  From 6:00pm - 10:00pm, enjoy the mild weather while enjoying the '50s themed street party, including car show, movie on the lawn, vendors, food trucks, drinks, games, and more.
  • Ballet Performance
    • This weekend is the third installment of Orlando's most popular ballet, Battle of the Sexes.  Shows are Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 2:00pm at the Bob Carr.  Prices start at $15 ($21 after fees).  Get your tickets soon -- they sell out quickly!
  • Rodeo
    • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6:00pm to midnight, come to the Citrus Bowl Festival Field for Orlando Rocking Rodeo.  Besides the bull riding itself, the $40 ticket includes three musical acts per night, free BBQ, two free drinks, rides, and - of course - line dancing.
  • Roller Derby
    • This Saturday at midnight is a special installment of Orlando's roller derby match, Love is Madness ($10 advance, $13 at door).  For more information about Orlando's roller derby scene, check out the post Underground Sports.

Orlando Underground Sports

Central Florida is definitely all about basketball and football.  Maybe even a little bit about soccer and soon ice hockey.  Still, there's a whole other world of sports around here that largely goes unnoticed.  Whether you're a die-hard monster truck fan, or curious about what a real roller derby match is like, keep reading to find an event you might not have previously thought about attending.

The Orlando Derby Scene

Something you may not have known about Central Florida is that Orlando has its very own roller derby league.  The Orlando Psycho City Derby Girls are a player-run Old School Derby Association league.  There are three local teams: Sunnyland Slammers, Serial Thrillers, and Arkham Assailants -- and not to forget the referees, the Zebras.

Looking for something different to do this Valentine's day?  Check out the Love is Madness, this Saturday, February 11th at midnight.  Most matches take place in Casselberry.  Click here for the complete list of upcoming events.

For more information on the sport, check out this article from the Sentinel.

Rodeos Aren't Just for Texans

If rodeos conjure up images in your mind of wind-swept Midwestern prairies or desert ranches, think again: Not too long ago, Florida produced more cattle than any other state.  It should come as no surprise then that Orlando is finally hosting a long-overdue rodeo tournament.  This weekend, Friday, February 10th, Saturday, February 11th, and Sunday, February 12th, from 6:00pm to midnight, check out the Orlando Rocking Rodeo at the Citrus Bowl.

Tickets are $40 ($20 for kids 6 - 12) and include free BBQ buffet from 6:00pm - 8:00pm and two beers with each adult entry.  Besides bull riding, there's a whole slew of entertainment, including nine musical acts, dancing, and rides.

Racing and Crashing around Orlando

On your way to the beach, you've probably passed through Bithlo.  If you don't pay attention, you might just fly through the small town along highway 50.  Yet there's one defining feature that always catches my eye: the giant sign for Orlando Speedworld, home of the Orlando World Street Nationals.  Besides street racing, Speedworld also hosts the annual Night of Fire and events like Night of Carnage and Crash-A-Rama monster truck shows.  In sum, this is Orlando's favorite place to see school buses, trailers, and monster trucks fight it out.  While you're in the area, check out Bithlo Motorsports, specializing in motocross.

Another high-profile monster truck rally that regularly passes through Orlando is Monster Jam.  Although the Orlando Monster Jam has already passed, you can still catch it in Tallahasse and Miami later this month.  Check the events page for more information on future shows.  If you can't wait for Monster Jam to come back, be sure to check out Crash-A-Rama at the Auburndale Speedway in Winter Haven, happening this April and again in October.
