Weekend Preview July 12th - July 14th, 2013: Things to Do in Orlando

It's time to party like it's 1789! We're ready to celebrate Bastille Day this weekend and a ton of other cool events!
Yeeeah... maybe that 7th cake is a bit excessive, Marie...
All Weekend

If you're able to catch a dry moment this weekend, head over to the annual Park Ave Summer Sidewalk Sale. Great discounts (a tank top for only $50?! madness!) and even better people/fancy dog watching.

Friday, June 12th

For those in and around New Smyrna Beach, check out InsideOut, a free informal studio visit with artists in residence, Friday night starting at 7:00pm.
No, sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!

On the other side of town, in Winter Garden, the Garden Theatre is showing Spaceballs at 7:00pm for $5 as part of the Friday Cult Classics movie series.

Two teams face off in a Brawl for All, an improv tournament at SAK Comedy Club where the audience decides which troupe moves on in the competition, and which team gets pelted with rotten tomatoes (not really... unfortunately). Tonight at 11:30pm. Tickets are $10.

We're on a banjo/ukulele kick right now, so check out local artist Laney Jones and others at her CD Release Party tonight at 8:00pm Lil Indies.

You know by now that we love free stuff - so check out The Basement (get it? right under The Attic) for their Grand Opening Party tonight from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Get yourself a free drink when you bring in a business card and there's an OPEN BAR between 8:00pm and 10:00pm. Not too shabby...

Saturday, June 13th

Our Pick
Saturday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm is game day at Urban ReThink! Play15's ReThink Games turns the creative space into the game room you wish you had, complete with board games, card games, role-playing games, video games, and BYO games. Your $5 goes directly to Play15 and their youth education programs. (check out our recent interview with Play15's dungeon master, Phil)

We're eagerly awaiting the opening of Black Bean Deli's newest location on 1835 East Colonial Drive. If you want to get involved, pass by the BBD Job Fair this Saturday from 9:00am to noon.

Curious about sculpting? Watch a six-hour live demo by sculptor Peter Forester at the Polasek Museum in Winter Park. Come by anytime this Saturday between 10:00am and 4:00pm and for $5, watch a master work his craft.

Feeling rebelious? Check out Audubon Park Garden District's Bastille Day Festival from 5pm-10pm. The event includes an open air market, live music, wine & cheese, etc. Bikes, Beans, and Bordeaux and Red Light Red Light are the places to be with their own festivities to celebrate a day of rebellion!

Baby Squirrel Shower: Because... Why not? Plus, there'll be lots of raffles, children’s activities, food and animals to support Back to Nature.

Join the DT Public Library for a Prohibition and the Roaring Twenties as they take a look back at the Golden Age of flappers, jazz, and speakeasies. They'll be screening "The Great Gatsby" starring Robert Redford, and themed beverages will be served. 3pm-5:30pm in the Albertson Room.

From the 20's to the 80's...

We've all been gearing up our acid wash jeans and perms for downtown's 80's pub crawl. We have a feeling that a little rain won't stop the fashion horror. 80's nights happening all around downtown. $17 tickets bought by July 12th, $20 at the door the day of the event.

Sunday, June 14th

Catch some good eats at the Food Truck Bazaar at Fashion Square from 6-9pm. Great lineup of Orlando's favorite trucks!

Don't forget to take advantage of the Mennello Museum's Free Family Day! We hear that they've got a crazy-good Southern Folk Art collection on display right now.

And finally, if Deliverance didn't scar you too badly, stop by Orlando Brewing to enjoy the sounds of fiddles, mandolins, banjos, and guitars playing awesome Appalachian tunes from 4-7pm.

What are you doing this weekend, Orlando? Leave a comment!
