Weekend Preview August 22nd - 25th, 2013: Things to Do in Orlando

Have a heroic weekend, everyone!

Thursday, August 22nd

To add a little terror to your Thursday night, stop by the Falcon Film Society (later unmasked by Scooby and the gang as The Falcon at 819 E Washington St) for a showing of Evil Dead (2013). Come at 7:00pm for the movie and stay for the craft beer and free popcorn.

Hey, Students: Celebrate your first week of the semester by checking out the Valencia College (Lake Nona) Food Truck Bazaar from 5:00 to 8:00pm, as well as a whole week of events at UCF Pegasus Palooza '13.

For more freebies, stop by Bikes, Beans & Bordeaux Cafe (3022 Corrine Dr) for the Cycling Happy Hour and New Belgium Beer Tasting. From 6:00 to 8:00pm, hang out with your favorite cyclists, enjoy some free apps, taste some free beer, and enjoy $1 off other beer and wine.

Friday, August 23rd

It's the fourth Friday of the month, and that means it's time for the Sanford Art Walk. Artists open their studios and galleries from 6:00 to 9:00pm while guests enjoy art, food, music, and more.

Also in Sanford is the Love Your Shorts Film Festival's Summer Rewind, showing 10 award-winning short films at 8:00pm at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center (201 S Magnolia Ave, Sanford); tickets are $5.

Every Friday, stop by downtown's favorite outdoor party: Wall Street Plaza's Friday Night Block Party, from 9:00pm to 2:00am. Live DJs, eight full bars, no cover, crazy DT people watching- what's not to love??

Saturday, August 24th

Get your tickets now to see the Lions play in the USL Pro Quarterfinals this Saturday at 7:30pm at the Citrus Bowl. Come early and stop by the United World Soccer Tailgate in Lot 11 from 5:00 to 6:30pm for FREE hot dogs, beer, t-shirts, and drink vouchers. Um, yes. Don't mind if I do.

This Saturday, Play15 presents ReThink Games at Urban ReThink (625 E Central Blvd). Stop in anytime between 2:00 and 7:00pm to play one of the many board and table-top role playing games there--or bring your own! The $5 cover benefits Play15's children's literacy initiatives. (And check out our recent interview about how D&D is helping kids in Parramore)

From noon to 7:00pm, come to the Retromended Vintage 1 Year Anniversary Sale (1231A N Orange Ave) this Saturday for $5-10 items in the courtyard and 25% off everything in the store.

This Saturday and Sunday is the 2nd Annual Central Florida Punk & Hardcore Festival at Will's Pub (1042 N Mills Ave). See over 40 bands from noon to 1:00am both days for only $12 pre-sale / $15 day of.

In between enjoying what this city has to offer this weekend, let's take a moment to give back. Stop by the Zebra Coalition on Saturday between 10:30 am and 2:00 pm where Rollins College and Zebra Coalition are teaming up to collect donations to fill up back-to-school backpacks for Central Florida's at-risk LGBT+ youth. Visit the following link for a list of items they are accepting and additional deets. http://goo.gl/6bLx6V.

Sunday, August 25th

Bored and looking to do some good around this town (while looking fabulously silly)? Then join Super Joy Riders this Sunday at 10:00am at Urban ReThink (625 E Central Blvd)! Ride your bike around town dressed as a super hero and perform a Random Acts of Kindness Scavenger Hunt. (If this sounds fun but you're embarrassed, wear a mask!) More info here.

Wind down this Sunday night with Independent Bar's (70 N Orange Ave) '80s to '00s night (I guess--their website hasn't been updated since the '00s). And don't forget, it's Day 2 of the Punk & Hardcore Festival at Will's Pub starting at noon.

    1. Well, that sucks... We'll have to figure out how to get these out on the RSS feeds earlier (We may need to post this on Wednesdays to get it to show up on RSS feeds on Thurs so you don't miss out on events that day...)

      Thanks for the heads-up!
