Weekend Preview Sept 13th - 15th, 2013: Things to Do in Orlando

Happy Friday the 13th! We've got everything you need to make this weekend a memorable one!

Friday the 13th!!!!

Head downtown for Florida Experimental Videos at the Gallery at Avalon Island for screenings of films by Kate Shults, Jim Drain and Clifton Childree, in relation to the current Florida Overtures, Undertones and Subplots exhibition. 7pm, FREE

While I'll be the first to admit "discount tattoos" is a really sketchy phrase, you don't have to worry about catching anything from your new infinity/Deathly Hallows/treble clef wrist tattoo (not poking fun here- someone on The Orlandoan staff has one of those) at Chicago Tattooing Co.'s yearly Friday the 13th tattoo and piercing specials day. Keep it one color and within the 1" range and it'll only be $13. Bring along a lot of patience because this is a popular event so you'll expect to wait a while.

Want to make your boyfriend/girlfriend squirm uncomfortably while opening his/her mind?? The Shift: Unity in Motion, focuses on shifting perceptions of movement, dance, and art through modern, improv, and contemporary dance. It may look weird at first, but dive in and watch Voci Dance, Yow Dance, Mary Love Dance Project, Coby Dance Project, Canvas Creative, Works by Elise Frost, and more, as they challenge your idea of dance and art. 8:00pm - 10:00pm Tix: GA- $20, Student/Senior- $15

Saturday, Sept. 14th

You know we love to go sailing... GARAGE SAILING! And what else do we love?? Kitschy memorabilia! Head to the RDV Sportsplex in Maitland for the Orlando Magic's Garage Sale and pick up some autographed memorabilia, player photos, and our favorite: historic Magic game day giveaways- you know this is going to get ridiculus real quick. 9:00am - 1:00pm

srsly.
Grab your sweetheart and mosey on over to Coupled: The Game Show & Game Night We're looking forward to a newlywed-style game, trivia, board games, Twister, Dance Freeze, and True or False Derby (not sure what this is...but sounds fun?), and prizes. Time to get silly, Orlando. $10 in advance, 12.50 at the door. 7:00pm at The Abbey in DT Orlando.

Fancy yourself a new wave/electronic dance enthusiast? The Falcon is hosting a New Order Tribute night with plenty of tunes to get you dancing à la Phoebe Buffay plus a screening of New Order Story, the 1993 documentary

A Hello Kitty Party at Revolution Night Club? I don't know why, but Sign. Me. Up.
Hello Kitty giveaways, a Hello Kitty costume contest ($100 prize!), and a Les Vixens burlesque show and Ladies of the Majestic shows. Yes, yes, a million times, yes. Free, starting at 8:00pm.

There's no elegant transition from Hello Kitty to Stormtroopers...

Saturday and Sunday: Watch Stormtroopers reclaim the History Center for the Empire! See the 501st Legion: Vader’s Fist ("The World's Definitive Imperial Costuming Organization" ...) march through Heritage Square in Stromtrooper gear at 11:00am on Sat. and then watch a Droid parade in Heritage Square at noon on Sun. Blast a stormtrooper; relax in the pilots’ lounge; and enjoy “Blue Milk,” “Wookie Cookies,” “Yoda Juice,” and “Bantha Brownies.” See Han Solo frozen in Carbonite, meet Darth Vader, and explore a Tusken Raider village. Don’t miss the character photo-ops! 11 a.m.-3 p.m. both days. Regular admission prices for 1-day ($12 or less). Special 2-day price: $18 for adults; $14 for children ages 5-12, seniors, students, and military with ID. Free for Members and children ages 4 and under.
Ah, who doesn't love nerds with a sense of humor?

Also spanning Saturday and Sunday is Lakeridge Winery's Jazz at the Winery. $2 gets you admission to the outdoor jazz concert (lineup) where food and wine are available for purchase.... BUT, there are free winery tours and wine tastings... meaning I'd do it on the cheap- skip the bar and have a few tastings while listening to jazz outdoors on a beautiful weekend.

Sunday, Sept. 15th

You know it's going to be a great Sunday when you're inundated with music- Southern Fried Sunday's End of Summer Shake-Up starts at 4 p.m. and benefits The Mustard Seed of Central Florida. Do right by your ears and community with a little soul, bluegrass, and funk on your Sunday Funday. $10 pre-sale, $12 at the door.

Park Ave CDs has hit that perfect combo of ear candy and actual candy. Be there at 6 p.m. for the MGMT listening/cupcake party! I hear music has an adverse affect on calories so you're good to go with more than one cupcake.

Speaking of music and things that make us happy- Casa Feliz is having another Music at the Casa event featuring some beautiful Flamenco Guitar music with Brian Hayes, set to some classic old Orlando scenery.

If you want to end your weekend in awe of a team in leopard print and glitter that can more than likely kick your ass, join the Orlando Psycho City Derby Girls for their last game of the season. Doors open at 4:30pm game starts at 5:00pm. It's $10 in advance, $13 at the door and all beer and wine sold goes to benefit the Greyhound Pets of America, Senior Sanctuary. Don't forget to bring your own chair, since at some point the derby girls had a pillow fight that went too far and chairs were ripped up and destroyed. They don't like to talk about it.
