Weekend Preview September 20th - 22nd, 2013: Things to Do in Orlando

Whoever thought learning could be so fun? We've got a bunch of events for you this weekend and you will def leave some of them feeling a more Mensa-esque (except without the pretentious need to tell everyone you're a smarty-pantalones).

Weekend Events

We covered the Global Peace Film Festival in one of our latest posts. It's going on at various venues around town through Sunday, September 22nd. Tickets are $8/show with some free events so be sure to check out the complete schedule.
From the documentary "Take Me Home"
about homelessness in Orlando
The 5th Annual Pirates of the Saint Juans Festival in Sanford happens to fall on the weekend after Talk Like a Pirate Day (yes. that is indeed a thing.). Come for the Pub Invasion Friday night from 8:00pm to 2:00am ($20) or stop by Saturday's Street Party from 5:00pm to 2:00am for a peg-leg race (aka 3 leg race), giant jenga, etc. (Free).

This week marks the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Commemorative events include:

Friday, September 20th

Retro Game Night at The History Center:
Proving adults will act like fools when allowed to
roam a museum unattended while still riding
the high of a recent Jenga victory.
Celebrate Audubon Park's PARK(ing) Day Friday between 10 and 2pm. PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.

What's better than a bunch of adults running around a closed museum with drinks and board games in hand? If these adults are dressed in ridiculous costumes of course! It's time again for The History Center's Retro Game Night, this time as Halloween Horror Nights Edition. From 7:00pm to midnight, dress as your favorite classic monster, enjoy free board games and nostalgic treats, hot dogs and pizza, and a cash bar. ($5 cash at the door; free for members.)

Tonight from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, Jai Gallery's monthly Fashion Lounge will feature garments by Orlando-based designer Bethany Mikell, who specializes is handmade fabrics.

Another Swap & Shop! Head over to Rollins College for Other People's Property's 2013 Fall Swap & Shop to swap your clothes and books for other hip Orlandoans' clothes and books. We must admit, we were pretty jelly of the loot some of you came home with last time... Plus Urban ReThink is hosting the book swap, so it's going to be pretty rad. Take your hand-me-ups and $15 to Rollins from 6-7pm and then start throwing elbows when the swap starts at 7pm.

20 slides each displayed for 20 seconds while someone tells a story about themselves, their work, or their hobby: that's PechaKucha Night Orlando. Come out and mingle with some interesting Orlandoans (including a Dungeon Master who we interviewed recently) and hear their stories at the Orange Studio (1121 N Mills Ave, $10, 7:00pm to 10:00pm). And maybe, just maybe, someone will tell us how to pronounce pechakucha.... *theORLANDOAN does not guarantee that you will leave knowing how to pronounce 'pechakucha'

Saturday, September 21st
