Weekend Preview October 11th - 13th, 2013: Things to Do in Orlando

Fall is here! Highs are only in the 80s, so break out your UGG®s and scarves. Here's what's up this weekend:

All Weekend



Enjoy digital mapping and huge scale building projection, holographic and lenticular art images, digital galleries, celeb artists, launch party, digital lounge, interactive alley, LED streetscape, the graffiti wall, and much more at the Titusville Art & Algorithms Festival, bringing arts into the digital domain to the Space Coast this weekend. The schedule is insane and includes gems such as: Midnight Film Classic (The Big Lebowski), a Video Game Symposium, and crazy awesome exterior building 3D projection.



Probably East Orlando's best Oktoberfest, the Avalon Park Oktoberfest, is going on from 5:00 to 10:00pm both Friday and Saturday. Live music, beer garden, kids games--you know the drill.

This weekend is also the 40th Annual Winter Park Autumn Art Festival  at Central Park (251 S Park Ave). This free event is going on Friday and Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. For more information, check out the Festival Guide.

Get your bluegrass and folk on at the 16th Annual Lake County Folk Fest where more than 100 musicians play Celtic, bluegrass, Americana, and folk music. Saturday from 10:00am to 9:00pm with a sunset concert; Sunday from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

Did you see our recent post, Turning the Idea of Latin American Art on its Head: P-Squared Gallery? Then you know that Saturday and Sunday marks their first Pop-Up Gallery Art Brunch! Head over to Mi Tomatina Paella Bar (433 W New England Ave) and browse striking, museum-quality limited edition prints from Latin American and Latino artists while enjoying endless plates of paella ($13) or other items off the brunch and lunch menus (around $8). Plus, exclusive prints are being offered at 16-20% off!


Friday, October 11th

Second Friday means art in Mt. Dora, and it's happening tonight from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Come for the art and music, stay for the wine and great food available in this little historic town.

Friday at 7:00pm, the Orlando Magic take on the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Amway Center in this pre-season match. Tickets start at $12, so get out there, cheer on the Magic, and try one of the new restaurants on Church Street.


Two food truck events happening Friday night, one north and one south of Orlando. Casselberry is hosting TheDailyCity's Food Truck Bazaar. Meanwhile, Celebration will see the Food Truck Showdown

Saturday, October 12th

Any Dr. Who fans out there? The Winter Park Public Library is hosting WHOSTOCK: 50 Years of Time & Space! Every Saturday culminating in an epic celebration on November 16th. Head over to the COmmunity room at 1:00pm and meet the many faces of Dr. Who


2013 Wiggle Waggle Walk is a FUNdraiser to support the SPCA of Central Florida. Come to Altamonte's Cranes Roost Park from 9:00am to noon for games, costume contests, and more!

Get your tickets early for the Leu Gardens Jazz'n'Blues Stroll! They're on sale now for $17/$12 members and their guests. The evening starts at 7:00pm with various artists, picnic baskets, and more throughout the garden.

Got kids? Don't got kids, but feel like getting in to the Orlando History Center for free (adults)? Check out Exhibit Explorers: A Sweet Halloween Celebration from 10:30am to noon. Go behind the scenes of Halloween Horror Nights in their Universal exhibition. Then, learn about Florida's agriculture history in the Citrus exhibit and use the sweet fruit for some Halloween crafts. Adults get in free, $10 for kids. Call (407) 836-8580 to register.

Sunday, October 13th


Orlando's favorite young classical musicians are back this Sunday at the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra Season Opener. At 4:00pm, come to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre to hear them kick off the season. Tickets start at $8.00.

Another season kicks off this Sunday, this time a little spookier: it's time for the Walking Dead Season Premiere Watch Party. 9:00pm at The Falcon (819 E Washington St); $4 craft beer special.

If you missed Saturday's food truck events, come to the Fashion Square Mall Food Truck Bazaar, Sunday from 6:00 to 9:00pm.

Who doesn't love an event labeled as "book signing, paranormal investigation"? The downtown Orlando Public Library is hosting author Marie Dees as she talks about her book series set in otherworldly Cassadaga, Florida at Viva Florida: Seeking the Spirit of Cassadaga, Sunday at 3:00pm.
