Weekend Preview: September 19th - 21st, 2014

Weekend Events

Have you been on the hunt for the perfect rusty "BEER" sign? Just us then? Either way, all weekend long Art Angels Market is having their Annual Fall Flea Bazaar with funky junk, apple cider, and possibly the most interesting people watching you'll find this weekend. Free, 5515 S. Orange Ave. from Sept 19-20.

Thursday, September 18th

Horns for Heroes has the goal of saving rhinos through art. Join this very important cause by attending this free art show at The Abbey from 7:00 to 11:00pm where top local and international artists have taken rhino statues and worked their artistic magic on them to create unique masterpieces. All art will be auctioned off by 11:00pm so get there with enough time to bid on your favorites!

Not feeling horny enough? Well, check out the opening reception for Donna Dowless' "Dresses: Objects of Art" show at Gallery at Avalon Island in DT Orlando. Free, 6:00 - 9:00pm, light bites and refreshments served & specialty beer provided by City Beverages.

Friday, September 19th

While we don't get much of a change in weather in the Fall, we can always use an excuse to clean out our closets and go shopping! Do just that at the OPP Fall Swap & Shop from 6:00 to 9:00pm, $10-15. It's not just clothes (shoes, jewelry, etc.) and it's not just for ladies (men & kids clothes welcome), so do your part to reduce and reuse for the planet! Unless it's underwear--throw that shit away.

We know we're not the only ones to see the Purple Purse posts all over social media lately. So, how about you get your wine tasting on at Tim's Wine Market in Oviedo for a good cause. $10 gets you wine samples, and awesome hors d'oeuvres (yes, I had to google the spelling...). This event, Wine Tasting for a Cause, benefits Harbor House's Purple Purse Campaign about economic empowerment; 5:30pm.

Saturday, September 20th

Shopping, entertainment, and drinking! All along one of Orlando's busiest streets! What could go wrong?! (Kidding, but please be careful, you boozehounds.) Ivanhoe Village Main Street presents
VIRGINIA DR. LIVE, with a wine stroll, beer garden, henna, and shopping. Free, 6:00 - 10:00pm, 817 Virginia Dr.

Put on your fancy pants and stick your pinkies in the air when you attend the Opening Night 2014: Mahler Symphony No. 1 by the Orlando Philharmonic. $17 for students, 8:30pm. EDIT: Student rush tickets are only $12! Find out more on the Phil's Facebook page.

If you're not feeling up to putting a tie on or shaving your legs (we totes understand), you can still feel like a VIP because Zwanze Day is back again!  Once a year, Belgium’s Cantillon brewery releases a limited number of kegs called Zwanze and Redlight Redlight got one, because duh Orlando Doesn't Suck. Limit is one pour per person and you have to pre-purchase it for $6. Pouring will actually start at 5:00pm but they will sell out, so get on it you beer snobs.

Sunday, September 21st

Pump up those bicycle tires or bust out your best walking shoes, CICLOVIA by reThink Your Commute is here. Robinson Street will be car-free from 10:00am to 3:00pm with tons of activities for all ages. I'll finally learn how to attach my bike to the front of a bus instead of duct taping it to the side during my commute. Free, on Robinson St. along Lake Eola.

Global Peace Day is today, so catch the last day of the Global Peace Film Festival happening around Winter Park. Various prices, including some free movies!

  2. Best place to take engagements photos for an authentically Orlando couple? Sounds like an ongoing Instagram challenge.

My vote would be for the 1927 Amtrack station, or under the bridge in Dickson Azalea Park.

Congrats! The couple that blogs together stays together.
